OTC and prescription drug mascots may play a larger-than-expected role in patients’ health care decisions. The United States and New Zealand are the only countries in the world that currently allow direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising. Taking advantage of the opportunity, US drug manufacturers spent $3.4 billion on advertising for the top 10 brand-name prescription drugs last year. The FDA oversees drug advertising to ensure that all ads are truthful, balanced, and accurately communicated. However, the agency does not have a say over pharmaceutical mascots. Throughout the years, these mascots have ranged from abrasive germs to cute creatures that offer solutions in a soothing tone. Drug branding and DTC advertising are powerful tools that can take medicating out of the hands of prescribers and pharmacists. Sertraline is used for a number of conditions, including major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder (SAD). The comparative efficacy of sertraline and TCAs for melancholic depression has not been studied. A 1998 review suggested that, due to its pharmacology, sertraline may be more efficacious than other SSRIs and equal to TCAs for the treatment of melancholic depression. A meta-analysis of 12 new-generation antidepressants showed that sertraline and escitalopram are the best in terms of efficacy and acceptability in the acute-phase treatment of adults with unipolar MDD. Sertraline used for the treatment of depression in elderly (older than 60) patients was superior to placebo and comparable to another SSRI fluoxetine, and TCAs amitriptyline, nortriptyline (Pamelor) and imipramine. Sertraline had much lower rates of adverse effects than these TCAs, with the exception of nausea, which occurred more frequently with sertraline. In addition, sertraline appeared to be more effective than fluoxetine or nortriptyline in the older-than-70 subgroup. placebo in elderly patients showed a statistically significant (that is, unlikely to occur by chance), but clinically very modest improvement in depression and no improvement in quality of life. A meta-analysis on SSRIs and SNRIs that look at partial response (defined as at least a 50% reduction in depression score from baseline) found that sertraline, paroxetine and duloxetine were better than placebo.

I Still Remember That Sad Little Zoloft Commercial Cartoon. My relationship with medication is shaky. As an adolescent, I was misdiagnosed.

Sertraline, sold under the trade name Zoloft among others, is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. But from the ages of 12-18, I was put on medication after medication for things like depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, sleep disorders, and other things I don’t even fully remember. When I see a new doctor and have to give my medical history, I have to tell them that I can remember a few of the medications I’ve been on by name, but there were far too many for me to recall every one of them today. I do mostly remember the ones with commercials, so I guess marketing is good for something? There were times that I was on as many as four drugs at once. I was on ADHD meds as a teenager for, no question, the shortest period of anything else. I still become nauseous from swallowing just an Advil because of how sick to my stomach my meds made me. But I am an adult with ADHD and struggle with it almost daily. I hated having to take them, and would often hoard my doses in pockets and drawers. Six months after August was born, I was diagnosed with post-partum depression and took an antidepressant for a short period. When I was pregnant with Halligan, I was diagnosed with PTSD. If you’re familiar at all with antidepressants and the like, you know that a lot of them need to be taken exactly as prescribed. Once I graduated and moved away from home, I took myself off my medicine, cold turkey. But once everything was completely out of my system, I felt like I was putting on glasses for the first time. And while I wasn’t able to be medicated for it because I was pregnant, I went to therapy to try to work some of it out.

Amoxicillin is used in the treatment of a number of infections, including acute otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis, pneumonia, skin infections, urinary tract infections, Salmonella infections, Lyme disease, and chlamydia infections. Children with acute otitis media who are younger than 6 months of age are generally treated with amoxicillin or other antibiotic. Although most children with acute otitis media who are older than two years old do not benefit from treatment with amoxicillin or other antibiotic, such treatment may be helpful in children younger than two years old with acute otitis media that is bilateral or accompanied by ear drainage. In the past, amoxicillin was dosed three times daily when used to treat acute otitis media, which resulted in missed doses in routine ambulatory practice. There is now evidence that two times daily dosing or once daily dosing has similar effectiveness. Amoxicillin is recommended as the preferred first-line treatment for community-acquired pneumonia in adults by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, either alone (mild to moderate severity disease) or in combination with a macrolide. It is effective as one part of a multi-drug regimen for treatment of stomach infections of Helicobacter pylori.
